Chimney Damper Issues

The fireplace damper is located in the throat of your fireplace, just above the firebox. It is typically made of cast iron and has a mechanical door which opens and closes to allow smoke and harmful gasses to vent up and out of the chimney.

Beware of visible rust on the underside of the damper, the damper door, or rust stains on your fireplace walls. If you do not have a chimney cap, rainwater can run down the flue and mix with creosote, creating a corrosive mix which can rust out your damper and stain your firebox.

Mineral deposits and rust stains are seen on the walls of this firebox, indicating water intrusion problems.

This damper is showing corrosion caused from rainwater running down the chimney. Chimney flues need to be covered to prevent such water intrusion.

A good chimney cap can prevent damage from water infiltration.

Your fireplace damper plays a critical role in proper operation of your fireplace, and helps seal off outside air when not in use. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous by-product of combustion (fires), yet is odorless and invisible. The proper operation of your damper is essential for good health and safety. More on dampers, flues, and fireplace safety.

And you certainly need a chimney cap over your chimney flue to keep water out of your firebox.
